The theme of the Nordic Council Environment Prize for 2012 is biodiversity and anyone can nominate suitable individuals or organisations for the prize. The deadline for the nomination of candidates is 12 December 2011.
The winner of the Nordic Council Environment Prize 2011 was Scandic Hotels for their work to promote sustainable tourism.
"The Nordic Council Environment Prize means a great deal to us and it is a great inspiration to our staff, who are at the core of Scandic's work with sustainability. In fact, we intend to use the prize money to develop inspirational material which can also benefit sustainable tourism in the future," says Anders Ehrling, President and CEO of Scandic Hotels.
In 2012 the prize will be awarded to a Nordic individual, company, or organisation, which has worked to boost biological diversity or increase public awareness on this subject.
The Nordic Council of Ministers has been very involved in the work with the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and the ministers for the environment, who are the force behind the Nordic Council's Environment Prize, have cooperated well in this area.
The winner will be announced on 22 May 2012, the UN International Day for Biological Diversity. The prize will be awarded at the Nordic Council's annual session, which will be held in Helsinki at the end of October 2012.
Please note that candidates should come from one of the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, or the three autonomus areas Greenland, Faroe Islands and Aaland Islands.
