The seizure of 71 pangolins being transported without documentation in Vietnam has highlighted that the formation of the IUCN SSC Pangolin Specialist Group has come at an important time.
Believed to have originally come from Malaysia, the animals would have been smuggled across the Lao PDR boarder into Viet Nam with an ultimate destination in China. Used as food and in traditional medicine, demand for pangolins appears to be increasing in China and Viet Nam.
The formation of the IUCN SSC Pangolin Specialist Group is timely as it will help fulfill the current need for more information about pangolins, the threats facing them and the solutions that will help conserve these animals.
