New water initiative launched in Viet Nam

“Water Partnership ‘Water for Food and Ecosystems (WFE)’ Vietnam – Netherlands”, a new initiative that IUCN is involved in, is the Viet Nam Government’s latest effort to sustainably manage water resources in order to support adequate food production and healthy ecosystems.

The launch of water for food and ecosystem initiative in Viet Nam

WFE is a partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Viet Nam (MARD) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality of the Netherlands (LNV).

This initiative was first announced in 2005 at the Conference on Water for Food and Ecosystems:  Make it Happen! in the Hague, the Netherlands. The partnership in Viet Nam started with the launch of its preparation phase (2007 – 2008) hosted this September in Hanoi.

The WFE initiative will facilitate enhanced cross-sector collaboration for formulating integrated policies across the agriculture, fisheries, environment, and industry sectors.  This cooperation will assist with poverty alleviation and the improvement of food security through implementing sustainable integrated water resources management in Viet Nam.

Under the direction of a steering committee, the initiative will be implemented by MARD in cooperation with other ministries such as the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), and Electricity of Vietnam (EVN). These institutions represent key sectors that heavily rely on water resources. LNV has requested that IUCN be a key partner to provide technical support in the initiative.
Water resources, food production, and ecosystems are interrelated systems. Due to its predominantly rural and agricultural-based economy, Viet Nam is among the countries that face the most acute challenge of how to balance the demand for water resources for economic development and food security with the protection of healthy ecosystems.
