As part of the SEARCH project in Jordan, a National Policy Workshop was conducted in Amman on the 15th January 2013

Mr Saeed Shami - Acting Regional Director IUCN ROWA

Starting off with the new year the SEARCH project in Jordan has launched a workshop to present and discuss the climate change adaptive measures that were developed by the local community for their area in the Zarqa River Basin.

SEARCH is a three year regional project working in five countries (Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon), funded by the European Union, to develop and pilot a resilience framework for local action planning capacities and methodologies to increase climate change resilience through joint learning, planning and testing by stakeholders through demonstration sites. In Jordan, the project is implemented by the Arab Women Organization (AWO) and the National Center for Research and Development and IUCN.
This workshop comes as part of the projects activity to engage all stakeholders in the project and foremost close the gaps between the local community and the decision makers in their areas.

The workshop was launched by the Chair of the National Steering Committee -Dr Radi Tarawneh (the Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture), Mr Saeed Al Shami (the Acting Regional Director of the IUCN – ROWA) and Mr Zaid Qatarneh (Deputy Governor of the Zarqa Governorate). Local community members from all the three demonstration areas in the ZRB were present; Khirbet al Hadid, Rusaifeh and Shomar to discuss these adaptive measures with the stakeholders and address accountability, responsibility and the resources needed to implement these measures.

The outcome result will be creating an overall adaptive strategy for the areas and the watershed as a whole.
