The natural world has had a deep impact on me all my life. It has been a constant source of wonderment, peace and perspective, and an enormous inspiration for me creatively.
However, although I have always loved nature, and have been greatly concerned about its protection and conservation, for many years I did not know what I could do personally to help. It was overwhelming - I didn't even know where to begin.
Then I became a Goodwill Ambassador for IUCN and began working with other environmental organizations, like Take Part and the Environmental Media Association, and started learning how I could have a positive impact on the environment as an individual. I think there are so many people out there who want to do something to help, but don't know how. As an artist and through social media and press, I have been given an incredible opportunity to share what I have learned (and continue to learn) with others, and enable them to help as well. Being able to do this has become one of my greatest joys.
Music has the power to inspire people and through that inspiration comes a desire to change things, to make a difference. Each of us has the power to generate change, within our communities, and on a larger scale by voting for those who will do the right thing by the environment.
We know that the status quo is not working. What we need is deep-rooted change, a shift in social consciousness, where everyone plays their part in creating the sustainable world that we all want. We are at a unique point in history - modern technology has given us the means to connect with each other on a global level, to combine our minds and imaginations towards creative solutions for the major problems our planet is facing, and to make our voices heard. So join the debate, put the pressure on your politicians. If we band together, just like millions of tiny drops of water joining with the wind can make a monsoon, we too can be a force of nature.
