In the framework of the REDD presentation, a meeting took place on the 11th of March 2009 at the IUCN premises. Participant from different organizations like IUCN, TROPENBOS, ANAFOR and ACAN-CAMEROON were present in the meeting. The meeting was lead by Mrs Consuelo Espinosa who is the Senior Forest and Climate Change Officer in IUCN USA Multilateral Office, United States of America.
The meeting commenced with a brief presentation of the different activities carried out by IUCN as far as forest governance is concerned and made mention of the fact that IUCN is searching for synergies between REDD and the government.IUCN is the main organisation reinforcing the activities of REDD;
The new project known as “Towards pro-poor REDD: Building synergies between forest governance, equitable benefit sharing and reduced emissions through sustainable forest management in five tropical countries” (Guatemala, Indonesia, Ghana, Liberia and Cameroon) was introduced. The objectives of the project are to demonstrate a tangible reduction of deforestation, to improve on forest dependent livelihoods and ultimately long term security of forest based carbon stocks in key forest rich regions.
The project will be implemented in Ghana, Liberia, Cameroon, Indonesia and Guatemala. Groups like decision makers in forest climate change, development and local authorities; local civil society organisations; private sector, multilateral investors, national and sub national financial institutions and brokers within the carbon offset markets will be targeted. The project will have three main bodies which are the project coordination team, the project implementation team and the project steering committee.
Important issues like the components, expected results and outputs and main activities of the project were discussed.Mrs Consuelo went ahead to outline this components which are: synergies between REDD pro poor mechanism and good forest governance; connection between the local and the national level for REDD; knowledge and communication for building and implementing REDD.The main activities of the project will involve analytical, awareness raising, capacity building and communication activities .It will also seek to ensure strong policy practice linkages by developing and testing governance and benefit sharing guidance along side early REDD pilot activities.
The meeting was a success because there was an atmosphere of cooperation and understanding of the project. This is deduced from the many questions and ideas proposed by the participants and the intensive discussion of the REDD project in general. All the ideas of participants will be verified and implemented to make sure that the project will be a success in the aforementioned countries.
