At the 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul, the IUCN Environmental Law Centre (ELC) held a side event in the IUCN Pavilion in order to share the findings of its current work on water-related payments for ecosystem services (PES) schemes. The results of PES case studies from 4 Andean countries (Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Colombia) were presented to an interested audience.
Also, conclusions were drawn which demonstrate the need for and the opportunities of a clear legal and institutional framework for water-related PES schemes.
The 4 case studies and their analyses are part of a joint project which was implemented starting in late 2007 together with the Forest Trends’ Tropical Americas Katoomba Group, an IUCN member. The case studies as well as their analyses form part of an upcoming publication, which will be available in English and Spanish.
