Experiences on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) planning process from the Lower Tana in Kenya have been used in developing an IWRM plan for Chicualacuala district in Mozambique. The IWRM planning process was conducted in the two administrative areas namely Mapai and Eduardo Mondlane with funding from the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and facilitated by IUCN-ESARO and Water Resources Management Authority (WRMA) - Lower Tana Sub-catchment.
During the meetings, participants identified the problems related to water and the environment; analyzed each problem and identified activities to address them. In addition, they developed the implementation timeframe, success indicators and the budget. These will be compiled into one plan for the district.
This transnational collaboration demonstrates the far reaching impact of the experiences and learning being developed through the Global Water Initiative (GWI) and IUCN Water and Nature Initiative (WANI) projects in the Lower Tana Sub-Catchment. The Chicualacuala District which is near the border with Zimbabwe has similar climatic conditions to the Lower Tana Sub Catchment. The Government of Mozambique identified Chicualacuala as a priority district requiring urgent attention in water and natural resources management in order to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) related to water and environment.
WANI has worked with over 80 partner organizations across the world to demonstrate water management that supports healthy rivers and communities. Its main funding is from the Government of Netherlands (DGIS) which has enabled extensive leveraging from multiple donors. The Global Water Initiative (GWI) is implementing a strategy in Eastern Africa which is empowering poor people to manage water in arid and semi-arid lands. GWI in Kenya includes CARE Kenya, Catholic Releif Services, Action Against Hunger and most recently collaboration with IUCN.
