Ahead of the third plenary meeting of IPBES - the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services - in January 2015, IUCN has compiled its recommendations for the Platform's work plan.

The recommendations have been produced through consultation with the IUCN Membership, Commissions and Secretariat to highlight processes, initiatives and concerns to those implementing the IPBES work programme and help ensure that the work of IPBES strengthens existing institutions.

The second IPBES plenary which took place in December, 2013 in Antalya, Turkey, approved an ambitious work programme for 2014-2018 with many components scheduled to begin in early 2014.

The IPBES work programme is summarised in IPBES/2/17 available online, along with detailed information on its Objective 1 (Capacity and knowledge functions), Objective 2 (Subregional, regional, and global assessments), Objective 3 (Thematic and methodological assessments) and Objective 4 (Communication and policy support).

The IUCN recommendations document provides suggestions regarding key considerations for the IPBES process as it addresses each of these components. It is intended to be modular so that IUCN suggestions on each component can stand alone and be used in its own right. This document will form the basis of the IUCN position paper for the third IPBES plenary meeting which takes place 12-17 January 2015 in Bonn, Germany.
