IUCN launches 5th Round of EIA Fellowship Programme

IUCN ESARO in partnership with Capacity Development for Environmental Assessment in Africa has launched the fifth round of the Environmental Impact Assessment Professional Development Fellowship Programme for Eastern and Southern Africa. The goal of the programme is to enhance capacity in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) through learning-by-doing and to strengthen professional environmental assessment networks in the region.

Capacity Development and Linkages for Environmental Assessment in Africa (CLEAA)

Up to eight fellowship opportunities will be awarded through competitive selection to individuals with strong academic qualifications and relevant work experience. Application is now open to professionals working in governments, non-governmental organizations, industry, volunteer organizations, universities and consulting companies in 19 countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana, Malawi, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Swaziland and South Africa.

The fellowships, each sponsored to the tune of US$15,000, provide practical EIA training and experience, link individuals to professional networks and strengthen regional EIA networks in Africa.

Successful candidate will start the programme in January 2009.

According to Issa Abdulrahman, ESARO’s EIA Coordinator, the programme is helping enhance the-much-needed capacities required to address the continent’s environmental challenges.
