Climate-Smart Leaders is a youth programme of Yayasan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (Foundation for Sustainable Development), where CEC member Darwina Widjajanti is Director. It rewards youth for taking action to combat climate change.
Climate-Smart Leaders is a program designed to support the development of innovative ideas and technologies by young generation to take action and create positive impacts in the society, and be part of responsible efforts to shape the future. The 24 youth (aged 15-24 years old) finalists with their best projects joined Climate-Smart Leaders’ Camp (July 5-9, 2010) at an Educamp to learn more about leadership, sustainable development, climate change, project management, social and technopreneurship through an active learning methods to trigger the participants to think ‘out of the box’!
An exposure activities during the camp were include to visit Suaka Margasatwa Muara Angke (Muara Angke Sactuary Park) to learn about mangroves (wetland) and bird conservation. Participants had the opportunity to offset their carbon by planting 80 mangroves at the Jakarta Mangrove Rehabilitation Centre Angke.
After the Camp participants are now facing the implementation phase (August – October 2010) where they are challenged to further develop their project proposal. The best 6 projects will receive CSL Award for the best Project and Leadership Competencies.
Climate-Smart Leaders is a program of Yayasan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan and Yayasan Inovasi Teknologi in juncture with the National Council for Climate Change and Earth Charter Initiative. The program is supported by Bank Negara Indonesia, Kompas Daily, Ancol Taman Impian, British Council Indonesia, Hand Print CEE, Greeneration Indonesia, The Climate Project Indonesia and Green Radio.

Doctors for River (Dragonfly as indicator for a healthy river)
Sumarlina named her project “Doctors for River” as her experiences in joining several trainings and networking activities amongst youth researchers. The idea came in 2008 where she conducted a research in Brantas River, East Java. According to her, dragonfly that lives in a river is very sensitive to temperature change. So, collaborative action should be taken to making sure that the river is clean. Her project is not only involving her school friends but also the local community and youth who live along the river to maintain the cleanliness of the river.

Feedlot System in Farming to Mitigate Climate Change
Idea offered to CSL is Combining Agribusiness and Livestock Feedlot with an environmentally friendly system, which is a sustainable business between farmers and the tea industry. As already known, the livestock sector accounted for the amount of GHG (Greenhouse Gas) is significant in increasing global warming, one of which caused the methane gas and nitrogen. Rochmat wants to increase the productivity of cattle, but at the same time reducing the output of methane and nitrogen. By using a mixed feed with a cow productivity of tea waste is expected to remain high, but the output of methane and nitrogen gas can be reduced.
