The climate change impact on the agricultural economy of Zarqa Basin upon which the livelihoods of its inhabitants depends was reported to be serious. HSBC jointly with IUCN are now embarking on an initiative to help adapting to such situation.
The HSBC Bank Jordan is committed to support local community water and energy initiatives designed by IUCN ROWA and consequently funded a project entitled "Community Organization for better Natural Resources and Energy Management” in the Zarqa River basin. The Project aims to introduce environmentally friendly best practices at the farm level which target the farming community of Khirbet Al Hadead. This will help increase water management efficiency and therefore limit agriculture losses.
This project comes as part of the Regional Project SEARCH. SEARCH is a three year project working in five countries (Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon), funded by the European Union, to develop and pilot a resilience framework for local action planning capacities and methodologies to increase climate change resilience through joint learning, planning and testing by stakeholders through demonstration sites.
Khirbet Al Hadead farmers and their families, who continued to use traditional irrigation systems, continue to suffer from water shortages, huge energy consumption for water heating and pumping. This project will consequently target farmers and their families to raise awareness and provide basic irrigation technologies and renewable energy devices to improve their livelihoods and their local environment.
Increased local capacity together with the introduction of local solutions will help the residents of Kirbet al Hadeed adapt to climate change. “The HSBC-IUCN initiative is expected to provide concrete results and solutions to problems on the ground” – Mufleh Al Abbadi, IUCN Project Coordinator. He added “we also expect that the technologies introduced will replicated by other communities in the area”.
