Today the IUCN Regional Office for Pan-Europe welcomes its new Interim Regional Director Hans Friederich.
After almost 8 years, Tamas Marghescu the previous Regional Director for Pan-Europe, is leaving IUCN for new challenges. “Leading IUCN work in Pan-Europe has been one of the great challenges of my life and I delivered what I promised in 2002: ‘To put IUCN on the map of Europe’ and now it is time to move on” Tamas Marghescu states “I am confident that Hans is the best person to succeed me”.
Tamas Marghescu started working with IUCN in 2002, bringing into existence the Regional Office for Pan-Europe in Brussels, Belgium. He brought with him a long and diverse professional track record in the fields of forestry, environmental policy and nature conservation acquired in a long career that included positions in government and UN agencies in Germany, Italy, Thailand and Hungary. Over the past years, Tamas has positioned IUCN as a key institution on the European political agenda. IUCN is now firmly embedded as a major convener and broker for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in Europe. Tamas was a major player in the creation of Countdown 2010 and has guided the initiative to become a globally renowned means of engaging stakeholders in biodiversity conservation at regional and local levels.
Hans Friederich is the former Head of Strategic Partnerships at IUCN Headquarters. A Dutch geographer by training, Hans obtained his PhD at the University of Bristol, UK in groundwater hydrochemistry. After seven years in Botswana, Hans joined IUCN in 1989, as Head of Project Management in the Eastern Africa Regional Office. In 1994, he moved to Asia, as Senior Technical Advisor in the National Environment Agency of Vietnam, and three years later Hans became the first IUCN Country Representative in Vietnam. From 1999 to 2004 Hans worked in the Asia Regional Office of IUCN in Bangkok as Regional Coordinator of IUCN’s Wetlands and Water Programme. Since January 2004, Hans has been Head of Strategic Partnerships at IUCN Headquarters in Switzerland, responsible for fundraising and donor relations.
“I am very excited about this new assignment and truly committed to strengthening IUCN’s presence in Pan-Europe” says Hans Friederich “I will do my best to live up to the expectations in the region”.
