Green Belt site officially marked in Backi Monostor

The Green Belt plate positioned in the heart of Gornje Podunavlje Special Nature Reserve

IUCN SEE team, Green Belt plate positioning in Backi Monostor, Serbia

In the presence of IUCN SEE team, NGO Podunav and City of Sombor representatives, Backi Monostor was officially recognized as a Green Belt site and marked by positioning the plate in its very centre. After its falling, the Iron Curtain left a number of comparatively undisturbed areas along its course from the Barents to the Black Sea – the European Green Belt. By promoting Backi Monostor as a Green Belt site, the Green Belt initiative wants to acknowledge the partners’ engagement in transboundary projects and activities in linking nature conservation and regional development in the area.

Backi Monostor is located in the very heart of Gornje Podunavlje Special Nature Reserve, internationally recognized as Important Bird Area (IBA).

Gornje Podunavlje is a part of the large transboundary floodplain in the middle Danube, along the route of the southern European Green Belt. It is one of the best preserved wetlands in the Danube River Basin area. A natural complex of more than 700 square kilometres embraces three protected areas: the Kopački rit Nature Park in Croatia, the Danube-Drava National Park in Hungary and the Gornje Podunavlje Special Nature Reserve in Serbia.
