As a result of the joint planning process in Marj Sanour, water harvesting projects were suggested by the stakeholders. These projects mainly focus on harvesting rain and flood water in pools, cisterns, dams, and reservoirs.
The harvested water during the winter season will be reused later in dry months for both domestic and agricultural purposes. Water harvesting techniques can be implemented as small scale projects or large scale ones. Cisterns and reservoirs can be constructed at household and farm levels, while dams and earth pools can be implemented at large scale level on the plain margins or in the lake area. Therefore, Palestinian Hydrology Group (PHG), proposed to implement water-harvesting project in Marj Sanour area as co-funding for the SEARCH project. PHG was chosen Judeiadah community to implement the anticipated project. As a part of two projects donated by Area Metropolitana de Barcelona through Asamblea de Cooperación por la Paz ( ACPP).
In addition, Palestinian Hydrology Group (PHG) with the Union of Agricultural Work Committee (UAWC) funded by the Netherland Representation Office in Palestine through the land and water resources management program constructed two artificial recharge groundwater Wells in Marj Sanour area.
Project 1 Improvement of access to water for domestic and agricultural use of the rural population of Al Judeida, Marj Sanour-Jenin, Occupied Palestinian Territories.
The main object of this project is to improve access to water for domestic and agricultural use for 10 families living in Al Judeida, Jenin through the construction of 6 rainwater harvesting cisterns with training in their use and maintenance provided to 4 members of the 2 families capacity not less than 70 m3 each.
Al-Judaidah village which belongs to Jenin District and located south of Jenin city was suffering from the shortage of water when the proposal submitted.
PHG and ACPP and after the approval of the project, coordinated with the local council and discussed the issue of implementing the cisterns or move them to a more in need village.
The partners agreed to assess not connected houses to running water in Al-Judidah. PHG engineer visited 12 in need families recommended by the local council. The families are not connected to pipe water due to technical issues. PHG engineer in cooperation with the local council chose 6 families of 12. The chosen families suffer from the low income, high number of kids, not easy to reach the houses by the private water tankers which resulted to high water cost and no future planning to connect the houses with running water by the local council. After constructing the harvesting cisterns, each family has storage of about 70mcub to harvest water in winter time free and has storage to store water in winter and summer time. As the families completed the cisterns during the rainy season, each family collected some water from the roof of their houses free.
Project 2 Land and water resource management for agricultural development in the West.
Palestinian Hydrology Group (PHG) with the Union of Agricultural Work Committee (UAWC) funded from the Netherland Representation Office in Palestine through the land and water resources management program to construct two artificial recharge groundwater Wells in Marj Sanour area.
The main objective was to enhance water supplies and optimal irrigation water use for improved agricultural production. That allowed farming households improve their capacity in enhancing agricultural production by implementing practices that help adapt to climate change with special attention to soil water conservation practices, diversification of crop selection, water harvesting, and solar energy for enhanced agricultural production.
Project 3 The Construction and Rehabilitation of Agricultural Roads in Marj Sanour Watershed Area
Project: Land and Water Resource Management for Agricultural Development in the West Bank
Funded by the Netherlands Representative Office in Ramallah, and managed and implemented by the Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC), in partnership with the Palestinian Hydrology Group, the Land Research Center and the Economic and Social Development Center of Palestine and in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture.
The project aims to increase food security, reduce poverty and increase the income of male and female Palestinian farmers and their families in the targeted areas. The project’s goals were achieved by following a comprehensive participatory approach that ensures and promotes commitment to teamwork and to the program’s desired outcomes amongst stakeholders.Within this program, the Union of Agricultural Work Committees is working on the construction and rehabilitation of approximately 40 kilometers of agricultural roads in the area of MarjSanour, which consists of Sanour, Maythaloun, Siris, and Aljadeeda villages.
The project will benefit a wide number of farmers working in farmland cultivation in the areas surrounding MarjSanour through facilitating proper access to agricultural land as well as increasing service operations vegetation and soil conservation. The project will also help prevent the increase of soil erosion, which will help increase and improve the productivity of different agricultural lands including vegetable planted lands, fruit trees-planted lands, and field crops lands. The project will also contribute in the reclamation and rehabilitation of hundreds of acres of unused agricultural lands by facilitating proper access to lands and implementing agricultural activities through agricultural mechanization.
