Demonstration projects in Egypt (As part of the SEARCH project)

In Egypt,  pilot projects were conducted in SEARCH chosen communities based in Minya and Beni Suef. Projects aimed at the rehabilitation and maintenance of sewage systems, raising awarness about climate change, plantation of economic trees, recycling agricultural waste, water saving irrigation systems and finally women empowerment.

Project 1: “Farmer field schools” in El-Masharka and Mayana villages in the field of awareness and climate change

The farmer field school is one of the guiding activities used in many countries around the world. The mechanism of implementation differs from one country to another and from one governorate to another based upon needs, potentials and target. However, the farmer field schools have the same purpose namely to transfer the guiding messages to target farmers.
The modern model has been applied to Farmers Field School, its Called Specialized Farmers Field School in 2012/ 2013 by SEARCH project, according to the methodology of farmer field schools in the field of raising awareness and adaptation to climate changes.
The project targeted 240 men and 80 women in each village (Mayana and El -Masharka)  over a period of 4 months.

Project 2:  Plantation of Tolerant and Economic Trees to maximize the use of water and Improve livelihoods

Based upon the resilience strategy developed in Ehnasia to rationalize water consumption this pilot project was implemented “cultivating Moringa trees”. This type of tree is useful for the adaptation to climate change (saves water and diversify/increase the income of farmers). Moringa could bear most of the climate events/conditions. Its water consumption is too low. It could be cultivated on the sides of water ways, gardens, around houses and roads. Every part of the tree is useful including the seeds, the green leaves, the dry leaves, the barks, roots, oils of the seeds and the wastes of the oil in the seeds. This is highly nutritious for human beings and animals. It could be also used for medicinal purpose.
500 seedlings and 1500 seeds were cultivated , nurtured and provided for farmers at a low price. An awareness raising session was held on the importance of this tree for the representatives of communities, and owners of nurseries in Beni Suef.

Project 3 – Maintenance of the Non Conventional Sanitation System

With the support of the French University in Egypt, Coordination meetings between community representatives in Mayana village and the representative of SIFE project that is implemented by the French University in Egypt to explore the needs, in the communities, as identified in SEARCH.
During analyzing the problems and Vulnerability Assessment within the activities of SEARCH project, the members of the committee formed from the CDA have reached to a conclusion that the water sector will be the most fragile sector in the village that need to be strengthened to face the climate changes.

Maintenance of the non-conventional sanitation system was carried out in the village to improve the quality of the effluent water from the gravel canal before discharging in the drain. Maintenance of the filters and their renovation took place. The dimensions of the used gravel was also changed to work more efficiently.
Through SIFE project, experts have visited the site, planned & technically implemented the system, in addition to organizing awareness symposia for people about the importance of keeping a clean environment and the conservation of natural resources.

Project 4: Irrigation water supply for lands located at the ends of canals and mesqas in the of Nazlat Almsharka Village

The most important problem found through the analysis of the SEARCH project problems and through vulnerability assessment is the problem of water shortage endings, and based on the most likely scenarios which is it is expected that there will be a negative impact of climate changes and the lack of awareness of adaptation methods with lack of funding. Based on the strategies that were developed to deal with this scenario, the project  aimed at interventions to overcome the problem and has provided modern agricultural machinery and awareness of the village farmers to adapt to climate change and the importance of the use of modern mechanization in agriculture and the importance of return achieved by for society.

 Project 5: Project to provide irrigation water and recycling of agricultural waste in the village of Mianeh

Agricultural waste ; the remaining parts after the harvest of major crops and is one of the most important problems that cause environmental problems in the village of Mianeh, despite their importance and effectiveness for agricultural land to the extent that it is considered as a wasted unused wealth, each ton agricultural crop produce from five to six tons of agricultural waste, 50% of this amount is natural organic materials that is considered a gold mine.
The presence of agriculture waste problem was confirmed through the analysis of the problems during the SEARCH project and through vulnerability assessment in addition to the problem of water shortage at the endings, and on the basis of the most likely scenarios, it is expected that there will be a negative impact of climate changes and weak awareness by methods adapt to climate changes accompanied with lack of funding. 

The project therefore, preserves irrigation water consumption, maintains soil fertility , increases the germination rate and much more. The project has provided modern agricultural machinery (a laser land leveling, a machine to chop agricultural wastes to produce organic fertilizer and animal feed), as well as providing awareness to village farmers to adapt to climate changes, by the rationalization of water consumption and benefit from agricultural waste as soil fertilizer and animal feed.
