Willem Ferwerda will step down as general director of the IUCN National Committee of The Netherlands (IUCN NL) as of 1 March 2012 after more than 11 years spent in this leading role.
“I am going to explore possible options for my next move, and wish to focus more on building the connection between business, NGOs, ecosystems and biodiversity”, Mr Ferwerda states in his farewell letter. “In the coming months I plan to investigate the best way in which I can make a significant contribution to the up-scaling and acceleration of this vital connection.”
As general director Mr Ferwerda has contributed to many conservation and restoration efforts. He also has made policy makers in The Netherlands more aware of this issue. In this context, IUCN NL has supported around two thousand conservation projects in the world, many of which implemented by IUCN member organisations.
At IUCN NL Mr Ferwerda also created the business network ‘Leaders for Nature’ which is the breeding ground for business to learn and act on biodiversity issues. “I am happy to see that this will be rolled out also internationally”, he says.
Lena Euwens will be the interim executive director of IUCN NL as of 1 March 2012.
