Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett announced a $180 million boost over 5 years to Australia's National Reserve System
On 30 March, Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett announced a $180 million boost over 5 years to Australia's National Reserve System, as part of the Government's $2.25 billion Caring for our Country initiative. This is in addition to the $%) million already allocated to boost Indigenous Protected Areas Given that the figure had fallen to a profoundly inadequate level of some $6 million for 07-08 this is a very significant boost in this critical program for building our national system of protected areas. The NRS assists states and territories purchase land, offers very attractive 2:1 funding for the private protected area trusts and funds the Indigenous Protected Areas sector.
It was very satisfying that at the announcement the efforts of WCPA ANZ and WWF Australia in achieving this goal were acknowledged. In truth there has been a profound collaborative effort between WWF Australia, particularly Andreas Glanznig, Martin Taylor and Paul Sattler and WCPA. While all achievements have many contributors WCPA has worked steadfastly to stress the key role of the NRS and to underscore its inadequate funding in many forums. We have taken this message to many levels and it was the key message of both organisations’ substantial Senate Inquiry Submissions. The WWF NRS audits Building Nature’s Safety Net I & II have provided crucial objective data.
