Project title: Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) in Mountain Ecosystems

Location: Panchase Area (Kaski, Parbat and Syangja Districts), Nepal

Duration: 2011 – 2016

Project background: The Panchase area, belonging to Kaski, Parbat and Syangja districts of Western Nepal, is characteristically rich in natural and socio-cultural values, and represents a mountain ecosystem that links the lowland with the high Himalayas of the Annapurna Himalaya range. With its mountain ecosystems, Panchase has demonstrated a high vulnerability to climate change with the drying of water sources, change in vegetation and increase in landslide incidences. 

Panchase is also known for its dense forests and immensely diverse biological resources. More than 589 flowering plant species have been recorded in the area, and of the 412 species of orchid reported in Nepal, 113 species are found in the Panchase region; including two endemic species (Panisea Panchasenensis and Eria Pokharensia) and 35 species with a high commercial value.

Panchase is designated as a protected forest and has been the focus of national, regional and local development strategies and plans, due to its high natural resource significance and its potential for tourism, especially eco-tourism.

Through the review of existing natural resouces and ecosystem initiatives and plans, IUCN is working towards assessing the area's EbA status and potential entry points. ‘Ecosystem-based Adaptation in Mountain Ecosystems’ is a global project, being piloted in three countries; Nepal, Peru and Uganda. The project is designed based on the premise that social and human adaptation is best achieved by ensuring the continued provision of ecosystem services and enhancing human capacities to address current challenges and future uncertainties. This is especially true in the context of the mountain regions of Nepal where communities continue to be significantly dependent on ecosystem services for their livelihoods.

Objectives of the project: The main objective of the project is to assist countries to manage ecosystems and ecosystem services, with the specific aim of reducing the vulnerability of communities to the impacts of climate change through the promotion of EbA options.

Expected outputs:

  • Development of methodologies and tools for mountain ecosystems
  • Application of the above tools and methodologies at the national level
  • Implementation of EbA pilots at the ecosystem level
  • Formulation of national policies and building an economic case for EbA at the national level
