Western Gray Whale Advisory Panel: Stories of Influence

The joint report examines the influence of an IUCN-led independent panel of scientists, which has been advising Sakhalin Energy – one of the largest companies operating in the area – as part of an innovative loan deal. The report explores how the panel generated benefits for business and conservation. It is based on interviews with more than 20 experts and stakeholders engaged in the process.

This updated version of the brochure introduces and explains the Western Grey Whale Advisory Panel (WGWAP): a joint partnership between IUCN and Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. The brochure details successful conservation efforts to date, and how knowledge acquired through collaboration is communicated and shared. Further scientific findings arising from the joint collaboration and future research necessary to reduce potential impacts on gray whales are discussed.

Meant for a non-technical audience, the brochure details an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to conducting marine seismic surveys near Sakhalin Island, home to a resident population of endangered gray whales. It provides information on the planning, monitoring, and mitigation processes that were developed for a marine seismic survey in 2010. It was produced by  WGWAP scientists and their colleagues on the panel’s Noise Task Force
