The Green List is a programme initiated by IUCN in 2012 that aims to encourage, achieve, and promote effective, equitable and successful protected areas in all partner countries and jurisdictions. The overarching objective of the Green List of Protected and Conservation Areas (GLPCA) programme is to increase the number of protected and conserved areas that are effectively and equitably managed and deliver conservation outcomes. This high-level objective will be reached through a set of underlying objectives:

1. To ensure that the GLPCA Standard provides a suitable measure for strengthening conservation outcomes and improving equitable and effective management of protected and conserved areas

2. To position the GLPCA programme as an accessible channel for conservation capacity-development for protected and conserved areas

3. To promote collaboration and investment in implementing effective and equitable conservation management in protected and conserved areas committed to the GLPCA Standard.

Since its launch at the World Park Congress in Sydney in 2014, to date, 20 countries have joined GLPCA with 25 sites admitted. In CBD Conference of the Parties 13 in Cancun, Mexico, GLPCA was officially included in a resolution that urges the Parties to:  “promote the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas as a voluntary standard to encourage protected area management effectiveness”.

Vietnam joined GLPCA in 2016 when MARD/DoNC officially endorsed the Standard. After a preparation phase, we are now convening the EAGL to ensure that the GLPCA Standard is applicable in Vietnam and to evaluate protected areas against the Indicators of the Standard.
