The FFF, an initiative by the FAO, International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and IUCN, promotes cross-sectorial coordination and community involvement in landscape management.

A third of the world’s forests are managed by families, small landholders and indigenous people; making their participation essential to the success of landscape management strategies. Importantly, these forests represent critical carbon stocks that must be preserved for countries to meet global climate change adaptation and mitigation targets.

The event at COFO will draw attention to the valuable role of smallholder farmers and their organisations, identify the challenges facing them and chart a way forward.

IUCN will also be part of an event on building multi-stakeholder cooperation on low carbon development in Brazil. More details here.

The biennial COFO meetings bring together national forest authorities, senior government officials and NGOs to discuss policies and technical issues related to the world’s forests. COFO 23 will focus on identifying how forests and sustainable forest management can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other international agreements.
