Eastern Africa

Eastern Africa has a wide array of pastoralist groups that have adapted to the local conditions to optimize livestock production systems.

The Eastern Africa region, including Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, hosts nearly 30 milion pastoralists (ca.12 million in Ethiopia, 7.5 in Somalia, 7 in Kenya, 1.5 in Tanzania and 1 in Uganda, according to various estimates). This region is especially suited for pastoralism because of the occurence of two rainy seasons that often allow dairy animals to sustain milk production all over the year. It is not surprising that a wide variety of specialized livelihoods in pastoral areas arise here.
