Environmental Policy Advisor joins the Oceania Office
Natalie Stalenberg has joined the Oceania Regional Office as its new Environmental Policy Advisor. Natalie has a background in water resource management, community consultation and communications. Most recently she worked with the South Australian Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation to develop policies for a water allocation plan for the Mount Lofty Ranges. This work included extensive consultation with a wide range of different industry and community groups. …

World’s Largest International Environmental Network establishes permanent presence in Oceania region
Suva, Fiji. Thursday 6 November, 2008 (IUCN) - The world’s largest international environmental network, IUCN - International Union for Conservation of Nature, was today officially recognised as an International Organisation in Fiji. The Republic of Fiji’s interim Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Civil Aviation, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, today signed an agreement with IUCN, formally establishing the IUCN Oceania Regional Office, which will serve as the regional hub for Oceania, which includes the Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand. …

Getting seabirds off the hook
The Hawaiian longline tuna fishery has managed to reduce seabird bycatch by 67% since 2001 by making alterations to their fishing gear and methods, a new scientific study shows. A combination of new bait technologies and fishing techniques have dramatically reduced seabird bycatch. More birdlife could be saved, however, if the rules were applied in a larger area and fishing effort reduced in certain seasons. …

Pacific Film Festival Targets Climate Change
Suva – 17 September - The first ever Pacific Climate Change Film Festival is set to commence in Suva with an official launch on Monday 22 September followed by a two-day extravaganza of 17 films made by film-makers from 10 Pacific island nations.
