UN Framework Convention on Climate Change

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), adopted in 1992, is the main vehicle for promoting international efforts to combat climate change. 2009 is a critical year with a series of UNFCCC meetings taking place designed to culminate in an ambitious and effective international response to climate change to follow the Kyoto Protocol. Governments who have signed up to the UNFCCC will meet for their 15th annual Conference of the Parties in Copenhagen, Denmark 7-18 December, where it is hoped this new (post Kyoto) climate change regime will be agreed on.

IUCN's position

IUCN wants governments to recognize that managing nature better helps people adapt to the impacts of climate change and can actually reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is promoting the inclusion of nature-based solutions to adaptation and mitigation.
