President Clinton Hails Impressive Tsunami Recovery Effort in Thailand and Launches Mangroves for the Future

Phuket , Thailand - Dec. 2006 : Former President Bill Clinton, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Tsunami Recovery, was in Phuket , Thailand on Saturday, to view progress on home construction and livelihoods, and to launch Mangroves for the Future.

President Clinton visited Hin Look Dieu, a small Moken (sea gypsy) community that experienced substantial destruction in the tsunami. 

After the tsunami, the community reached an important agreement with the local government, allowing the residents to continue to live on the Sirinart National Park property where they had resided prior to the tsunami.

Mangroves for the Future:
Reducing Vulnerability and Sustaining Livelihoods
Presented to a donor roundtable in New York on 12 September 2006, Mangroves for the Future is a multi-agency, multi-country initiative for the long-term conservation and sustainable management of coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, coral reefs, wetlands, forests, lagoons, estuaries, beaches and sandy shores. It covers ten tsunami-affected countries in South and Southeast Asia and the Western Indian Ocean. The initiative involves collaboration between multiple partners, including government agencies, NGOs and CBOs, research institutes and universities, UN agencies and other multilateral bodies.

Agreement Between IUCN and CARE USA

The World Conservation Union (IUCN) in Asia and CARE USA ’s Asia Regional Management Unit signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday 29 November 2006. The agreement will increase the cooperation of the two organizations and strengthen their partnership in Asia to contribute to environmentally-sensitive rehabilitation and sustainable development.
