THE IUCN - WCPA PORTAL

Papers presented to the Parks Congress Workshops

Note: Information for the World Parks Congress Workshop Stream and Cross Cutting Themes Leaders only!

We are pleased to inform you that the IUCN WCPA portal is now ready to receive the Congress papers. We will use the WCPA Portal as a repository of the stream papers before and during the Congress, and we will also use it afterwards to make the WPC papers and presentations available on line. As the WCPA portal, is Internet-based and decentralized, it allows users to access the portal worldwide and to submit the papers directly to the stream leaders for review. Please note that the papers submitted to the plenary and symposia will be sent directly to David Sheppard and Maja Zitkovic as previously decided.

Through this communication we would also like to invite you to participate in this Virtual Congress and play an active role as editor of the portal page defined for paper submissions to your stream. We do not expect that this editor's role will be a time consuming task and it actually should make it easier for you to manage all the papers submitted to your stream.

A document with the instructions to assist you playing this role is attached and available on the portal (in the Topic Explorer : 1.1 WPC Paper Submissions Center, 1.1.2 For Workshop Stream Leaders).

The portal has been set up to invite authors worldwide to submit their documents directly to the portal simply by accessing the main URL www.biodiversity.org/wcpa, then link to section 1.1 WPC Paper Submissions Center and follow the instructions.

They are invited to follow guidelines for the presentation of their paper. These Guidelines for Presentations are available on the site together with the instructions.

Under the portal section one, 2003 World Parks Congress, subtopics have been created, in particular 1.3 Congress Workshop Streams and 1.4 Cross Cutting Themes. These are your assigned portal working areas. As you navigate through the different workshop streams and cross cutting themes you will see at the lower right side of your screen the area for the "Editors of this topic," your name will appear listed as editor. In this editor's area you will also see Carola Borja's and Cécile Thiéry's names also appearing as editors. Their role, however, is limited to facilitating the process but certainly not to approving papers.

Authors who would like to contribute papers for a particular stream will post them under the "Paper Submissions" folders located in your portal working area, and from there you can monitor the new documents that have been posted.

Please note that you will receive an automatic notification via email from the portal when new documents have been submitted. Kindly notify Carola Borja or Cécile Thiéry if you do not want your name to appear as editor, and/or if other assistants will need editor access to your portal working areas

We envision that the IUCN WCPA portal will provide benefits to the work of WCPA for all commission members and guests as we prepare for the World Parks Congress. Some of these benefits include:

Keeping all papers submitted by authors in a decentralized data
depository that can be accessed by many WCPA commission members and guests who may not be attending the congress but who would like to share relevant papers for WPC workshop streams.
Allowing authors and stream leaders to send and receive file
documents that normally, due to most email size system limitations, cannot be sent by regular email.
Enabling portal users and guests to see what other papers are being
contributed, which may also be relevant to other workshop stream leaders.
Assisting authors and stream leaders to communicate more efficiently
while the revision process of contributed materials takes place and gives you direct access to the author's bio, CV and personal contact information.

Thank you in advance for your active participation in this virtual congress. If you have questions, need assistance or have comments, please contact Carola Borja or Cécile Thiéry.
