Delegates Reminder for the WPC

With just about 3 weeks to go before you arrive in Durban, South Africa we would like to make you aware of the following:

Registration and accreditation: Please ensure that you carry some form of identification on your person when registering for the congress. This could either be your passport or an identity document.

Malaria: Please ensure that you check on any areas outside of the Durban area that might be considered as a malaria risk area. Delegates should note that if they have been booked on any field trips the relevant area that is a high risk area has been advised in their field trips confirmation letter, the area being Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park (Zululand). Any delegates who have booked any pre and post congress tours through the official travel and tour operator, African Conferences Worldchoice (ACW), would also have been advised in documentation supplied by ACW, where any precautions had to be taken for malaria.

Yellow Fever: If you have left a yellow fever zone area within 6 days of entering South Africa, you will require a yellow fever vaccination certificate.

Collection of luggage during transit: Please note that when arriving in Johannesburg you MUST collect your luggage at Johannesburg International Airport and re-check in luggage for the leg from Johannesburg to Durban.

Confirmation of registration - please remember to bring along your confirmation registration letter received from JPdL to assist your entry into South Africa should you encounter any problems.

Visas - please note that unless you are traveling from a visa exempt country you will not be permitted to enter South Africa on arrival at Johannesburg International, Cape Town International or Durban International Airports. Delegates arriving in South Africa without a valid visa will be subjected to an R 850.00 fine and a R 14 000.00 refundable deposit (refundable on departure from South Africa). Please ensure that you have a valid visa to prevent any problems at South African immigration control.

What Is Happening with Invitations to the Congress?

The World Parks Congress is proving to be extremely popular and registration is filling fast!

Delegate numbers have been set by agreement with South Africa at 2,500 so that logistical and programmatical arrangements remain manageable. Once the Congress is full subscribed, registration will have to be closed and a place may not be available even if you have been invited.

Please register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

If you have nominated before 30 June 2003 you will be sent an invitation.

Enquiries: ads@iucn.org

Sponsored participants at the Congress - How will it work?

An invitation to the Congress is not a guarantee of funding. We are asking everyone to look for their own sources of support. IUCN has some limited funds available for sponsored participants and we are asking those invited participants who need support to contact Delwyn Dupuis (ded@iucn.org). We will then set up a transparent process for allocating the limited funds available for sponsored participants, which will include consultation with IUCN Regional offices where appropriate. Decisions will be based on the following criteria:

  • Supported participants must be from a country in need;
  • There will be regional, gender and age balance in the participants identified for support;
  • Preference will be given to those delegates who are able to actively participate in the Congress agenda and to influence the Congress outcomes;
  • In general there will be no more than one person supported from the one agency or institution.

All sponsorship requests need to be received before end of June 2003
