This is where new documents are posted and news disseminated. As well it host the daily coverage of the congress events and gives useful updates in the build up to the WPC. It includes links to the PARKS newsletter and a section for the Media, covering press releases, media briefs and details of media accreditation

Strategic Participatory Communication: Achieving Results for Protected Areas

Date: 14-15 September 2003 // ROOM 21A, 21B, 21C & 11CD

Course title: Conservation results by managing Change – being strategic in communicating.

The Commission on Education and Communication CEC and the USAID GreenCOM project are teaming up to bring you rich learning from international experience on how to be more effective in relating with people and organizations, encouraging participation, building support and managing change for conservation results. Together they will provide a short course during the World Parks Congress in Durban, September, 14-15, 2003.

The IUCN Commission on Education and Communication CEC provides support and professional development for more effective communication.

Where: Durban World Parks Congress

Results of the course:

- understanding of communication as a policy and management tool;
- pointers to managing communication to handle stakeholder processes more effectively;
- to communication as a part of policy and management, to relate to tourism and other sectors;
- to reduce conflicts associated with your protected area.

At the end of this short course participants will know the basics of planning communication strategically, and have some tools to assist in their follow up work. They will have practiced presenting a message to a stakeholder and have critically reviewed it by seeing it played back on video. Participants will also have prepared a stakeholder meeting and taken part in a role play to better appreciate what works and what does not. This course will enable you to explore your issues in communication and practice your response.

Participants: training institutions, protected area training managers, park managers; other participants considered on a case by case basis.
