The IUCN World Congress on Protected Areas, or IUCN
World Parks Congress as it has become known, is a 10 yearly
event which provides the major global forum for setting the
agenda for protected areas.
Previous Congresses have had a tremendous impact in
assisting national governments to create new protected areas,
and direct more resources towards biodiversity conservation.
The Vth IUCN World Parks Congress will be held in Durban,
South Africa, from 8 to 17 September, 2003. Both Patrons of
the Congress, former South African President and Nobel Peace
Prize winner Mr Nelson Mandela and Her Majesty Queen Noor
of Jordan strongly endorse the theme of the Congress, "Benefits
Beyond Boundaries".
The Vth IUCN World Parks Congress is organised by IUCN
- The World Conservation Union, its World Commission on Protected
Areas (WCPA), South African National Parks and the Government
of South Africa

agreeing on new commitments and policy guidance for protected areas worldwide. “Tomorrow
3000 delegates will return to their home countries armed with the Durban Accord,
Action Plan and Recommendations, as well as new knowledge and contacts. For the
past ten days, parks were centre stage and at the front of people’s minds,
and we hope they will remain so beyond Durban,” says Achim Steiner, Director

COLLABORATION TO SAVE THE WORLD'S WETLANDS

World Conservation Union and the Ramsar Convention Bureau today
sign an agreement of cooperation to save wetland ecosystems. “The
result of this agreement will be more effective international
policy and local action to conserve some of the world’s
most valuable and beautiful wetlands”, says Dr.

TAKES PART IN THE GLOBAL "GAP ANALYSIS"
Durban,
South Africa, 12 September 2003 (IUCN) - IUCN’s
Species Survival Commission is contributing to an assessment
of gaps in the existing global protected area system – terrestrial,
freshwater and marine - which must be filled to ensure coverage
of as many species as possible, particularly those included
in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and their habitats.
The Commission, through its 7,000 expert members, can help
design protected areas using the best available science and
is developing criteria and procedures to identify and select
the most important sites for biodiversity conservation. (...)

70 people from the conservation community, mining industry,
governments, and indigenous peoples’ groups gathered
at a Vth IUCN World Parks Congress meeting and took part in
a lively discussion on extractive industries and protected
areas. The aim of the meeting was to strengthen the industries’ commitment
to protected areas and biodiversity. Interim results were presented
on the biodiversity assessment and management “best practice” guidelines
being developed under the IUCN-International Council on Mining

FIRE PARTNERSHIP ESTABLISHED TO COMBAT
ESCALATING FOREST FIRES ISSUES

World Conservation Union, The Nature Conservancy and WWF International
today announced that they are joining efforts to establish
a Global Fire Partnership that will help prevent the kind of
destructive forest fires currently raging throughout North
America, Europe and other parts of the world. The Partnership
was launched at the World Parks Congress, highlighting the
three organizations’ commitment to finding solutions
to unwanted wildfires which impact human lives, degrade the
environment and threaten the success of conservation activities

progress is being made towards conserving the world’s
most spectacular habitats and wildlife, a report
released today by the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP)

ADOPTS FIRST COMPREHENSIVE REGIONAL TREATY ON NATURAL RESOURCES,
ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
African nations
have received a road map to manage their natural
resources more sustainably with the recent adoption of a landmark
treaty by the Heads of States of the Members of the African
Union. The revised African Convention on the Conservation
of Nature and Natural Resources was approved by the Assembly
of the African Union on July 11, 2003 in Maputo, Mozambique.
The revision of the 1968 Convention, first called for in 1980,
brings the treaty up to date with the latest developments
in international law, and the move towards sustainable development.

of Europes largest mountain ranges has received a major
boost with the signing of the Convention on the Protection
and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians at the Fifth
Ministerial Conference Environment for Europe
in Kyiv, Ukraine. Covering an area of some 206,000 square
kilometres, and stretching across eight countries (Ukraine,
Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria,
and Serbia & Montenegro), the Carpathians harbour unique
biodiversity, are the headwaters of major rivers, and offer
an essential habitat and refuge for many endangered plant
and animal species, including the continents largest
mountain populations of brown bear, wolf, and lynx.

The Vth IUCN
World Parks Congress has received strong endorsement from Countess
Setsuko Klossowska de Rola, a renowned painter of Japanese origin
and an Ambassador for the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.
The Countess has graciously accepted to become a World Parks
Congress Ambassador and, in this capacity, is proposing to give
young people the opportunity to participate in the Congress
with an art exhibition, using natural, local materials, which
will stand as expressions of the creativity of children and
youth of the world. The Countess has a particular interest in
the linkage between nature, culture and people, and is closely
involved in the UNESCO programme "World Heritage in Young
Hands". The World Parks Congress, a unique 10-yearly event
which provides the major global forum for setting the agenda

act at Mediterranean wide level"
.- The Mediterranean region is a single ecoregion although
it holds different territorial realities and necessities.
During four days, 120 experts from 22 Mediterranean countries
were debating initiatives, tools opportunities, constraints
as well as presenting different experiences and to set the
stage for defining a clear profile of Mediterranean specificities.
The broad regional forum that has been presented in Murcia,
along with the case studies and technical base documents,
will enable the development of future trends and orientations
that will be later carried from the Mediterranean to the World
Parks Congress (in Durban, South Africa) in September and
then back to the region.

600 people attended a high level launch for the 2003 World
Parks Congress on Monday September 2nd, 2002. Mr. Nelson Mandela
Co Patron of the Congress was joined by a star studded line

of the Zulu Nation. The high profile speakers continued with
