MARINE PROTECTED AREAS MAY BE THE ONLY HOPE FOR THE SURVIVAL OF SAWFISHES SAYS IUCN SHARK SPECIALISTS

White Shark. Photo: Jeremy Stafford-DeitschA strong message that is being fed into the World Parks Congress by the IUCN Shark Specialist Group is that marine protected areas (MPAs) may provide the only hope for some threatened shark species. If certain species such as the sawfishes do not receive immediate protection, they may soon be extinct. Yet MPAs are just one vital aspect of a suite of measure needed to protect ocean species. Sharks are commercially valuable and their numbers are plummeting due to overfishing either directly or indirectly through bycatch. Overfishing is fuelled by the growing demand for shark fin soup in Asia. Of particular concern are the deepwater species such as gulper sharks. Coastal species such as some guitarfish, rays and catsharks, are also seriously threatened - as inshore dwellers, they have narrow ranges which are subject to intensive fishing.

BRIDGES FROM DURBAN TO CANCUN

Global Biodiversity ForumWhilst delegates to the Vth IUCN World Parks Congress gather in Durban, South Africa, others have convened in Cancun, Mexico for the Fifth Ministerial Conference to the World Trade Organization (WTO) that started yesterday and will go on until the 14th. Although the agendas of the two meetings are different, they do converge on a number of points. It has been evident for some time that trade policy and environmental policy can no longer ignore each other's existence. Conceptually, each is an integral element of sustainable development; which, ostensibly, is a stated goal of both as enshrined in Agenda 21 and the Preamble of the Marrakech Agreement that established the WTO. Find out more about the WTO conference in the latest special reports from Trade Bridges BioRes, produced by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) in collaboration with IUCN's Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy.

"ROAD TO RESTITUTION" - DOCUMENTARY LAUNCH DURING WORLD PARKS CONGRESS
Makuleke village in the outskirts of the Kruger Park, south Africa. Photo: Anthea StevensOn the remote edges of South Africa, there are people doing something central to the country's future. Once threatened with removal from their ancestral lands to make way for wildlife, they are now using nature to rebuild their lives and the economy of the country. This is the story of their road to restitution... The film takes place in three remote areas of South Africa; the Richtersveld, Kosi Bay and the Northern Kruger. The documentary examines, in a critical and honest way, the lives of three communities and the challenges they face now that they have returned to their ancestral land. Director, Karin Slater, says of the production; "Road to Restitution is a film about conservation from the communities perspective." Her exquisite footage of some of the most beautiful areas of South Africa, is the perfect backdrop to the powerful central characters who give rural people a voice through the medium of this film.

"BIENVENUE" TO THE CARTAGENA PROTOCOL
Guide explicatif du Protocole de Cartagena sur la prevention desrisques biotochnologiquesThe Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety enters into force today, 90 days after the ratification of Palau on June 13, 2003. To make it more user-friendly for those involved in its implementation, the IUCN Environmental Law Centre and FIELD are launching the French version of the Explanatory Guide to the Biosafety Protocol, which was released in English on the 22nd of May this year. The translation, made possible by contributions from the French, Swiss and Canadian Governments, draws on IUCN's international expertise in environmental law to distil the meaning of the Protocol and thus facilitate its understanding and the ongoing development of national biosafety frameworks. A Russian version will be available soon, and will be followed by the publication of the Guide in Spanish before the end of the year. (...)
