The Global Training Strategy for World Cultural and
Natural Heritage,
was adopted by the World Heritage Committee at
its 25th session in Helsinki, Finland, 11-16 December
2001. The purpose of the Strategy is to strengthen
conservation of cultural and natural heritage
worldwide by increasing the capacity of those
responsible for, and involved with, the management
and conservation of World Heritage sites. The
Strategy includes three principles and an action
plan.
The three principles of the Strategy
are:
- Training is a cost-effective means to achieve
Committee objectives,
-
Training should be integrated into the World
Heritage planning framework,
- Commitment to high impact, professionally-organized
training activities.
IUCN, with support from the World Heritage Fund
and in collaboration with the UNESCO World Heritage
Centre, has an important role in training and
capacity building for the conservation of natural
World Heritage sites. In particular, IUCN assists
site managers in preparing project proposals,
evaluates requests for training assistance from
States Parties and advises on ways to improve
training activities. IUCN staff and WCPA experts
take part in a number of training workshops around
the world each year organized in conjunction with
the World Heritage Centre and States Parties to
the Convention. IUCN and its partners are currently
developing a natural heritage training programme
for the next 5-10 years.
