WCPA Packard Awards

| |
The Fred Packard Award is named
for the individual who served as Secretary to
the Commission in the early years, especially
during the early 1970's when the Commission was
hardly alive. Fred kept up the communication to
members from his garage! At his death, he left
a sum to establish an award in recognition of
"valor" which usually came down to the
recognition of game guards in Africa and Asia
who have lost their lives in defense of wildlife
and protected areas.
The Packard Award is now made to individuals or groups to recognise outstanding service to protected areas. This is the
only award which is directly related to IUCN's
World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) (formerly
the Commission on National Parks and Protected
Areas - CNPPA) activities and which has the objective
of recognizing protected area professionals and organisations.
The award includes a certificate.
Cash prizes are issued in certain circumstances.
Nominations can be accepted for any individual
(or group of individuals) who has carried out
his/her duties in the service of protected areas
above and beyond the call of duty. For ease of reading the Packard awards have been seperated in three sections
