Forest protected areas
Nigel Dudley and Adrian Phillips
There is confusion about forest protected areas and in particular what “counts” as a protected area in this context. These issues came to prominence because the UNECE/FAO Temperate and Boreal Forest Resource Assessment, and various regional criteria and indicator processes for sustainable forest management, require governments to be specific about the number and extent of forest protected areas in their countries. Some of these questions also apply in reporting to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
