This paper outlines the current World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA), how the current IUCN protected area definition and its categories fit into the WDPA, the challenges faced by the United Nations Environment Programme - World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) in maintaining and updating the database and the IUCN categories within it, solutions that are proposed to address the challenges, and the use that is made of the WDPA currently.
