A Barcode for Protected Areas
John Waugh, IUCN USA Multilateral Office
Central to our ability to assess the effectiveness of conservation issues is an agreed means of describing what is and what is not protected.  Lands set aside and dedicated to conservation are termed “protected areas”.   There are many approaches to the management of lands for conservation, ranging from strict protection where human access is highly restricted and natural processes are allowed to persist unaided and unimpeded by mankind, to active management intervention in favor of a species or community, e.g., through manipulation of habitats to create ideal conditions.  To understand conservation impact, it is necessary to understand management approaches.  But it is also necessary to understand environmental conditions, not only of the protected site, but of the landscape in which it occurs.
