Edited by R Bushell, University of Western Sydney, Australia; P F J Eagles, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

Bringing together the diverse experiences of park agencies and managers, conservation NGO's and international agencies this book examines the role of tourism in protected area management. Using case studies from around the world it provides examples of successful partnerships between community, public and private sectors. It also explores how tourism can be used as a management tool for financing protected areas. It concludes by summarizing the lessons learnt and the challenges facing protected areas in the future.

Tourism is growing rapidly, and the regions that are seeing the greatest growth are in developing countries with high levels of biodiversity. This report asks two main questions:

  1. what mechanisms can protected areas use to raise funds from tourism?
  2. to what extent should protected areas raise funds from tourism?

Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas: Guidelines for Planning and Management
Best Practice Protected Areas Guidelines No. 8.

These guidelines aim to build an understanding of protected area tourism, and its management. They provide a theoretical structure, but are also intended to help managers in practical ways. The underlying aim is to ensure that tourism contributes to the purposes of protected areas and does not undermine them.
