Protected Areas and Spirituality
Proceedings of the first workshop of the Delos Initiative - Montserrat 2006
The Delos Initiative focuses on the sacred natural sites in developed countries throughout the world (such as Australia, Canada, the European countries, Japan, New Zealand and the United States of America). Its main purpose is to help in maintaining both the sanctity and the biodiversity of these sites, through the understanding of the complex relationship between spiritual/cultural and natural values. This publication includes all presentations made at the First Workshop of The Delos Initiative, which took place in Montserrat in 2006. All speeches delivered and case studies presented at the workshop have been included, as well as conclusions and lessons learned.

Undestanding the Cultural and Spritual Values of Protected Areas
For many people around
the world, protected areas are perceived not so much as in-situ repositories of genetic wealth, but as primal landscapes of the creation that deeply touch the spiritual, cultural, aesthetic and relational dimensions of human existence.

The
'Full Value of Parks' is the first comprehensive
look at the values associated with parks and
other kinds of protected area. The economic
benefits of protected areas are undeniably
important, yet the reasons why people care
deeply about them usually have little or nothing
to do with money. Instead, people value parks
as settings of breathtaking beauty, as venues
of scientific inquiry, as destinations for
much-needed recreation, as places of spiritual
self-discovery, even as places where one can
go to heal a wounded psyche. Because these
reasons are intangible, however, they also
are hard to analyze. Thus there has never
been a review of the full range of benefits
and values of protected areas. This book fills
that gap. more...
