For further publications on Protected Areas and Global Change consult the IUCN Protected Areas Learning Network (PALNet). PALNet is designed specifically to enable PA managers, policy makers, and stakeholders to adapt their policies, strategies, and practices to anticipate global change threats and at the same time capture the new opportunities generated by these changes

Protected Areas: buffering nature against climate change |
On 18-19 June 2007, scientists, non government and government experts were brought together by WWF and the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) to find ways to enhance the key role of Australia's National Reserve System in enabling biodiversity, our native plants and wildlife, to adapt to and survive climate change.

Securing Protected Areas in the Face of Global Change: Issues and Strategies
Charles Barber, Kenton Miller, Melissa Boness
A report by the Ecosystems, Protected Areas and People Project |
This report represents an early exploration of the issues and options for protected
areas management with respect to global change. Obviously, there are many types of
change at play, and many approaches to apply and test. Within these chapters you will
find discussions of impacts and options for addressing issues of biophysical, socioeconomic,
and institutional change. We have sought to bring together the key findings
from other important works, and pair them with the results of our own experts and
consultations. We hope that the reader will make full use of the extensive reference
sections for each chapter, and pursue further information through the authors and centers
of excellence listed therein. There will be more to come. WCPA will continue to present
new findings, and the results of ongoing field testing.

Securing Protected Areas in the Face of Global Change: Lessons learned from the South African Cape Floristic Region
Bastian Bomhard and Guy Midgley
A report by the Ecosystems, Protected Areas and People Project, IUCN ASIA 2005 |
The Ecosystems, Protected Areas and People Project, supported in
part by the UNEP-GEF, has developed a Protected Areas Learning
Network (PALNet), to enable organisations responsible for protected area
policy and management to share the lessons they are learning in coping
with global change factors. One project component is a network of Field
Learning Sites.
The South African Cape Floristic Region (CFR) was identified as a
Field Learning Site where theoretical and applied science and practical
implementation are being combined, with the involvement of appropriate
stakeholders, to derive innovative responses to anticipated climate change.
This report summarises relevant lessons learned in the CFR and South
Africa in general during this process.
