Protected Areas: buffering nature against climate change

On 18-19 June 2007, scientists, non government and government experts were brought together by WWF and the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) to find ways to enhance the key role of Australia's National Reserve System in enabling biodiversity, our native plants and wildlife, to adapt to and survive climate change.

Four publications are the result of the "Implementation of the East Asia Action Plan for Protected Areas" Project.  The project was initiated in 1998 through IUCN ís World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), with the support of The Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan.  The project stemmed from the "Regional Action Plan for Protected Areas in East Asia" (1996) which highlights a number of priority activities to be implemented in the region.

Directory of Proected Areas in East Asia Peopl, Organisations and PlacesDirectory of Protected Areas in East Asia People, Organisations and Places

It identifies key individuals working in the protected areas field, describes the relevant government and non-government agencies and institutions operating in the region, as well as international organisations from other regions that have an interest in conservation and protected areas in East Asia and lists the existing protected areas.

The Non-Material Values of the Machu Picchu World Heritage Site: from Acknowledgement to Action
Recent progress in solving some of the environmental problems plaguing this world famous World Heritage Site has not helped to resolve problems associated with the non-material values of the site.  A broader integrated management perspective is required to treat both the natural and cultural values of the area as part of a conceptual whole.

People and Protected Areas in South Asia
ISBN 99946-32-53-1) published by IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas and Resources Himalaya Foundation, suggests that there is a huge challenge to south Asian protected areas to demonstrate their contribution to biodiversity conservation whilst enhancing the livelihoods of resident communities. The book has 23 papers and most are country-specific (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka), targeting a diverse set of issues to demonstrate that “sustainable use” of biological resources is necessity not a “strategy.” Thus, the book carries a few success stories along with conservation issues connected with science, education, ecotourism, political and financial constraints to suggest that conservation and development are not two poles but twin goals for south Asia.
