Biodiversity in Development

Three publications address the sustainable use of biodiversity in development. Assessing the importance of biodiversity for the livelihoods of poor people and offering guidance on integrating biodiversity into development cooperation, three new publications are now available for distribution from IUCN.

Developed by the Biodiversity in Development Project - a joint IUCN-DFID-European Commission initiative - and based on worldwide consultations, these publications are an excellent reference source for development cooperation actors at all levels -- from policy makers to technical field advisors. The documents offer a 'how to' guide for decision makers on integrating biodiversity into development policy and practice as well as providing key background information on biodiversity issues for both general and technical audiences.

1) Strategic Approach for Integrating Biodiversity in Development Cooperation

Reviewing the importance of biodiversity for development and the causes of biodiversity loss, the Strategic Approach lists key actions that need to be taken by policy makers, programme designers and coordinators, and project implementers to ensure the integration of biodiversity in development cooperation. The emphasis is on using biodiversity to contribute to, rather than compete with, efforts to fight poverty worldwide. Click here to download (large file, pdf, 5MB)

2) Guiding Principles for Biodiversity in Development: Lessons from field projects

Capturing the experiences and opinions of people working on biodiversity issues in some 35 EU partner countries, the Guiding Principles aim to ensure that development cooperation projects are effective and sustainable and take full account of environmental security and biodiversity issues. 3) Biodiversity Briefs

A series of 20 four-page summaries aimed at raising awareness about of key biodiversity issues within EC development cooperation; the Biodiversity Briefs are divided into three types:

Policy Biodiversity Briefs offer principles and recommendations for policy and programme level decision makers e.g. Food security and biodiversity:
Sector Biodiversity Briefs highlight issues for technical advisors at policy, programme and project level, e.g. Health and biodiversity; and
Background Biodiversity Briefs summarise topics for a general audience and indicate where more information can be found, e.g. Biodiversity - what is it and why is it being lost?
