Certification of Archipelago NP as first marine PAN Park

Archipelago National Park in the Baltic Sea has received recognition this week of being one of the best managed wilderness areas in Europe. As a result of undergoing an intensive independent assessment of its conservation, visitor management and sustainable tourism development it received the coveted status of being a certified PAN Park. Oulanka National Park was the first Finnish national park in the PAN Parks network.

World’s protected areas are “critical to stemming extinction crisis”

Protected areas managers from around the world met at a recent forum organized by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) in Inverness, Scotland, to share their expertise.

The leaders of government organisations who manage the world’s major protected areas gathered for the 2007 World Protected Areas Leadership Forum to discuss the challenges facing national parks, world heritage sites and other protected areas.

The effects of climate change on protected areas and ideas on how to manage them most efficiently and effectively were brought up at the meeting. Conservation leaders from protected areas in Australia, Canada, Finland and Kenya, to name but a few, also discussed the importance of marine protected areas and the social and economic value all protected areas.

Heliodoro Sanchez takes the Miller Prize for Innovation18 October 2007
Selected by an independent international jury, Colombian Dr. Heliodoro Sanchez received the first ever Kenton R. Miller Prize for Innovation on National Park Sustainability. On receiving his certificate and a check for US$5,000, Sanchez stated that “critical areas, like mangrove forests, must be protected to maintain their ecological functions and serve the communities that depend upon them for their livelihoods.”

Indonesian survey demonstrates that marine protected areas accelerate coral recovery

The reason is that it is harder for the poor to adapt, say, to a rise in sea levels, water shortages or loss of species.

The Republic of Guinea has designated a specially protected area for vultures, the first of its kind in Africa. The ‘vulture sanctuary’ consists of approximately 450,000 ha in the Fouta Djallon Highlands, a region that holds a significant proportion of West Africa’s vultures.

Rhino poaching is the most pressing issue facing Nepal's wildlife today. With rhino populations shrunk by about a third since 2000, commission members of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) in Nepal submitted a petition to the Environment Conservation Committee of the Nepalese House of Representatives on 12 January 2007 to prompt immediate action in favour of Nepal’s rhinos.
