Three listserves exist at the moment for WCPA
- the wcpa members listserve: wcpa_members_kn@indaba.iucn.org - all WCPA members are part of this list. This list is moderated to avoid unnecessary messages
- the wcpa steering committee listserve wcpa_sc@indaba.iucn.org - this list is reserved for the WCPA Steering Committee. Eligibiity to this list is decided by the WCPA Chair, Nik Lopoukhine; and the Head of the Protected Areas Programme, David Sheppard.
- the wcpa marine list wcpa_marine@indaba.iucn.org .- this list is for all the WCPA marine members, the IUCN Protected Area Programme, and the IUCN Marine Programme

Send a message to the list
- to send a message to the whole list use the email address of the list
- Messages sent to the list are archived with an index of Subject headings, so please help future list users by selecting an appropriate Subject title

Reply to a message of the list
- the lists have been set up so that if you just use the reply button, it goes to the sender of the message
- to reply to the whole list you must select reply all, please do this only if you message is of interest to the whole group
- this is not the case for the steering committee list

PUT_Attaching a large message or file :
The lists we maintain normally at IUCN do not permit attaching files to messages sent to a list. This restriction is due to the fact that many members of our lists live in countries where modem connections can be slow and expensive.
Therefore, if you wish to distribute a file to the members of your list please use the PUT command to store it in the Directory Service of your list.
- Use the PUT command to upload the file to the Directory for this list, and notify the list members that it is available by email (see Requesting Files, below). This is the
recommended method.
- post a brief description of the document to the List and invite subscribers to reply to you directly with a request for the file, or to get it from the lsit
The PUT, DIRectory and GET commands work as follows:
TO Upload a file to a list using PUT:
To: email of list with put eg wcpa_members_kn-put@indaba.iucn.org
Subject: (none is required)
BE SURE there are **no spaces** in the filename - you may need to
re-name the file before sending it.
Then: BE SURE TO attach the file to your message using the File/Insert or Attach command used in your email program.

GET_Retrieving an attachment or file
To get a list of all files available in the Directory Service of your list, send this command:
To: email of list with dir eg wcpa_members_kn-dir@indaba.iucn.org
Subject: (none is required)
or To: listadmin@indaba.iucn.org Subject none is required and in the first line of the message, write:DIR name of list eg wcpa_members_kn
You will receive 2 messages:
1) a confirmation of your command, and
2) a list of all the files.
You may then Reply tothe second message, ==>>removing **all** text which
your email program inserts above the file list!! <<==, and placing an "X" in place of the "O" next to the names of the files you wish to retrieve. Al >files beginning with AR" (for example: Ar991222.txt) are list archive>files, so this is the archive for: 1998 22 DEC).
or To: listadmin@indaba.iucn.org -
Subject: (none is required)
and in the first line of the message, write:
GET name of list filename
You may repeat this line in the message for additional filenames:
GET name of list filename1
GET name of list filename2
GET name of list filename3
The file(s) you request will be sent to you by email.

Archive of messages
all messages exchange on the list are archived at the following weblink
http://indaba.iucn.org:1276/listlogon.mml
to access use the full email address of the list and your email address

To PAUSE/SUSPEND receiving email from the List.
This
option stops the list from sending list postings to you, but you remain a member of the list. Messages **are not** accumulated for you during this period. You may specify the length of time in days during which you wish the list to suspend mailings you will automatically receive messages from the list after this period:
To: name of list-suspend@indaba.iucn.org
Subject: (none is required)
text in message: suspend 30
or if you have not specified the amount of days
RESUME receiving email from the List:
To: name of list-resume@indaba.iucn.org
Subject: (none is required)

Digests
Instead of getting each message from the list separately, you may ask the list server to send you a single file containing all the messages that were sent that day. To do this, send a message to the list server control address with the command "DIGEST". For example:
To: name of list-request@indaba.iucn.org
Subject: (none is required)
text in message: digest
The list server will send you a confirmation message back, and every
24- hours you will receive a single e-mail message with a list of >contents and each message listed in it. To return to immediate delivery of messages, please use the Subscribe command
name of list-subscribe@indaba.iucn.org

Email Netiquette
- messages should be kept simple and to-the-point - as your language may not be the main language of the receivee
- Transmission of files or messages which are not within the intended scope of the list
should be avoided.
- post messages as "plain text" files
- Always be conscious of *to whom* you are responding.
- treat only *one theme per message* -- this makes both response to messages and storage of e-mail files much simpler and less confusing and makes it easier for others to follow a particular discussion "thread".
- All messsages exchanged on this list will also be archived and
accessible via a World Wide Web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. The URL for the archive is: http://indaba.iucn.org/archive/weblogin.cf
