Until 2005, in recognition of the way that our understanding of sustainability depends on context and differs widely around the globe, the SUSG was comprised of 18 decentralised regional networks each with a coordinating Chair. However, because of regional priorities, and the fact that membership depended very much on the interests of the regional Chair, the SUSG did not always have a place for individuals with a strong theoretical interest in sustainable use, or those participating in the debate on sustainable use which took place within CITES and the CBD.

To address the problem, a 'Global Concepts Group' was created to complement the work of the regional groups. The global group was expected to cater for around 30-35 individuals who, while they may have regional experience, also have a global perspective in subjects as diverse as natural resource tenure systems or population modelling.

The Global Concepts Group works with regional experts to help develop the core concepts within 'sustainable use' and create advice and guidance which can be used in the design and implementation of field interventions.

At the moment the SUSG Chair also chairs the Global Concepts Group, but a substantive 'regional' Chair for the group will be appointed by the end of 2006.
