Sturgeon conservation in Romania and CITES

Regional strategy and CITES

As a direct result of the SRG / DDNI activity within BSSMAG, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia & Montenegro and Ukraine adopted during the second Regional CITES Meeting on sturgeons held in November 2003 in Tulcea / Romania a Regional Strategy for the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Sturgeon Populations of the N-W Black Sea and LDR in accordance with CITES. An Agreement on the implementation of this strategy had already been signed by Fishery and CITES MA of Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia & Montenegro and is in the process of being signed by officials of Ukraine.

Website on sturgeon and CITES

Since its launch on July 5 th 2003, the SRG / DDNI Tulcea website Sturgeons of Romania and CITES has been visited over 1000 times, with 10% of the visitors from abroad. The most frequently visited section contains the database for Sturgeon captures. This is encouraging, as all sturgeons landed should be marked and reported to the authorities (Regulation No. 350 / 2001 of the Ministry of Agriculture of Romania). The national CITES MA also requests such reporting from traders when issuing export permits.

The website is expected to be updated completely in May 2005.
