WELCOME to the website of the IUCN/SSC Sturgeon Specialist Group (SSG)

The Sturgeon Specialist Group

The Sturgeon Specialist Group (SSG) is a global network of over 40 sturgeon experts contributing to the conservation and sustainable use of sturgeon with members in more than ten major sturgeon range states. The SSG was established under the auspices of the Species Survival Commission of IUCN - the World Conservation Union. The SSG works in collaboration with various programmes of IUCN, such as the Red List Programme, the Wildlife Trade Programme and TRAFFIC. The SSG is well positioned to address the threats facing sturgeon species.

IUCN - The World Conservation Union

IUCN - The World Conservation Union brings together states, government agencies and a diverse range of non-governmental organizations in a unique global partnership - over 1 000 members in some 140 countries. As a Union, IUCN seeks to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. IUCN builds on the strengths of its members, networks and partners to enhance their capacity and to support global alliances to safeguard natural resources at local, regional and global levels.

The Species Survival Commission (SSC)

The Species Survival Commission (SSC) is the largest of IUCN's six volunteer commissions. With 8 000 scientists, field researchers, government officials and conservation leaders, the SSC membership is an unmatched source of information about biodiversity conservation. SSC members provide technical and scientific advice to conservation activities throughout the world and to governments, international conventions and conservation organizations. They provide information critical to the development of conservation products and tools such as the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. SSC works primarily through its 120 Specialist Groups, which represent a wide range of plants and animals, particularly those threatened with extinction, or issues such as veterinary medicine, conservation breeding, and sustainable use of wildlife.
