Many thousands of years ago, horses and their relatives, or equids,
were the most abundant, medium-size grazing animals of the grasslands
and steppes of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Today, there remain only
seven species, and many of these species are at risk of extinction.
This is the web site of The World Conservation Union Species Species
Survival Commission Equid Specialist Group, a group working to
ensure the survival of these equid species, through better understanding of their
ecology and improved management.
More detail about the group is available, as well as ecological
descriptions of the equid species, and their
conservation status. Some
projects associated with the Equid Specialist Group are briefly reviewed,
and significant publications from the group are cited,
including the comprehensive Equid Specialist Group's Species Survey and Conservation Action Plan.
Lastly, contact information is available, so that
you may contact members of the group with queries.
