. The primary purpose of the Cycad Specialist Group is to carry out the actions outlined in the Cycad Action Plan, which clearly identifies priority species and areas for conservation and, therefore, makes it easier to access funds for specific projects. The key
focal areas are Red Lists,
collections in botanic gardens, habitat
conservation,
trade in cycads
The 2004 following report was submitted by the CSG to the IUCN, detailing the priorities and work conducted by the CSG during 2000-2004: One example of a current CSG research and fund-raising priority is provided below. 2005 CSG meeting in Xalapa, Mexico, cycad aulacaspis scale
(CAS), Aulacaspis yasumatsui Takagi, was identified as a
critical issue for cycad conservation worldwide and was given priority
status.
