Research & Funding Priorities

The primary purpose of the Cycad Specialist Group is to carry out the actions outlined in the Cycad Action Plan, which clearly identifies priority species and areas for conservation and, therefore, makes it easier to access funds for specific projects.

The key focal areas are Red Lists, collections in botanic gardens, habitat conservation, trade in cycads , liaison with cycad enthusiasts, consistent taxonomy, sustainable utilization and community nurseries in developing countries, provision of information, and fund-raising.

The 2004 following report was submitted by the CSG to the IUCN, detailing the priorities and work conducted by the CSG during 2000-2004:

One example of a current CSG research and fund-raising priority is provided below. This page, however, is still incomplete. Please check back periodically for additional priority research and funding needs and opportunities.

At the 2005 CSG meeting in Xalapa, Mexico, cycad aulacaspis scale (CAS), Aulacaspis yasumatsui Takagi, was identified as a critical issue for cycad conservation worldwide and was given priority status.
