| The IUCN Red List partnership |

To help significantly increase the number of species assessments for the Red List, a Red List partnership has been formed comprising IUCN and its Species Survival Commission, BirdLife International, Conservation International's Center for Applied Biodiversity Science, NatureServe and the Zoological Society of London.

and the Species Survival Commission (SSC) |

Founded in 1948, IUCN - The World Conservation Union brings together 78 States, 114 government agencies, 800 plus NGOs, 35 affiliates, and some 10,000 scientists and experts from 181 countries in a unique worldwide partnership. Its mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. The Species Survival Commission (SSC) compiles and manages the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species which is one of IUCN's flagship products. Through its Specialist Groups, SSC assesses the conservation status of species, identifies, and prioritizes action to reduce threats to biodiversity, conducts research and on-ground conservation action, contributes to global conservation policy, and provides advice to decision-makers and international conventions. BirdLife International is the Listing Authority for birds on the IUCN Red List and through its national NGO Partners and Secretariat, works closely with the IUCN/SSC Specialist Groups and a worldwide network of thousands of experts and other organizations in this capacity. For over 20 years, BirdLife has published information on globally threatened bird species in regional Red Data Books (Africa in 1985, Americas in 1992, Asia in 2001) and comprehensive global assessments (1988, 1994, 2000 and 2004), such that birds are recognized as the best documented class of organisms. BirdLife therefore plays a leading role in developing biodiversity indicators from the IUCN Red List. BirdLife makes its information on globally threatened birds available on the World Wide Web, supported by a dynamic database - the World Bird Database. This wealth of information lays the foundation for BirdLife's work and guides its priorities for action, notably through the development and implementation of Species Action Plans, and the identification and management of Important Bird Areas. Founded in 1987, Conservation International (CI) believes that the Earth's natural heritage must be maintained if future generations are to thrive spiritually, culturally, and economically. Our mission is to conserve the Earth's living natural heritage - our global biodiversity - and to demonstrate that human societies are able to live harmoniously with nature.
CI works strategically to conserve Earth's most biodiversity-rich and threatened places. We rigorously measure our results based on three criteria: avoiding species extinctions, protecting critical habitats, and establishing landscape-scale conservation corridors that can reconcile biodiversity conservation and socioeconomic objectives. Our success relies on obtaining and sharing sound science; creating and supporting diverse partnerships; and demonstrating the links between human welfare and biodiversity, in order to increase the quality of life for people everywhere. The Center for Applied
Biodiversity Science at Conservation International (CI-CABS) |
|
 |
The Center for Applied Biodiversity Science (CABS) at Conservation International seeks to strengthen the ability of CI and other institutions to identify and effectively respond to emerging threats and pressures affecting the Earth’s biological diversity. CABS pursues this mission by collecting and compiling the baseline data needed to address extensive gaps in knowledge about biodiversity and its threats, and by working to analyze and predict specific threats, including the potential impacts of socioeconomic factors on biodiversity loss. CABS research provides early warnings of biodiversity loss as well as powerful tools for curtailing it.
CABS has partnered with the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) to create the IUCN/CABS Biodiversity Assessment Unit, which merges SSC’s unmatched ability to collect biodiversity data with the analytical strengths of CABS.

NatureServe is a non-profit conservation group dedicated to providing the scientific information and technology needed to guide effective conservation action. Representing a network of 75 natural heritage programs and conservation data centers in the United States, Canada, and Latin America, NatureServe is a leading source for detailed scientific information about threatened plants, animals, and ecosystems. Founded in 1826, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is an international scientific, conservation and educational charity: our key role is the conservation of animals and their habitats. ZSL runs London Zoo and Whipsnade Wild Animal Park, carries out scientific research in the Institute of Zoology and is actively involved in field conservation in other countries worldwide. www.zsl.org
