1,221 and counting: More birds than ever face extinction
12-06-2007

The latest evaluation of the world’s birds has revealed that more species than ever are threatened with extinction, and that additional conservation action is critical to reversing current declines.

BirdLife International’s annual Red List update –which takes into account population size, population trends and range size for all 10,000 bird species worldwide- states that 1,221 species are considered threatened with extinction and are to be listed as such on the 2007 IUCN Red List. New Red List Assessment of North American Reptiles Finds Rare Good News

A newly completed assessment of the conservation status of North American reptiles shows that most of the group is faring better than expected, with relatively few species at severe risk of extinction.

The comprehensive international assessment was carried out by zoologists from the non-profit conservation group NatureServe, working in partnership with reptile experts from universities, the World Conservation Union (IUCN), and Conservation International. Read more

More species threatened - 2007 IUCN Red List

The 2007 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is today being released, updating global understanding of the conservation status of the world’s plants and animals. There are now 41,415 species on the IUCN Red List and the number of species threatened with extinction has risen by 188 since last year.

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is one of the key partners that works with IUCN to produce the Red List. ZSL’s Institute of Zoology was a key contributor in the development of the categories and criteria of the Red List and regularly plays a critical role in the production of the Global Species Assessments, the main documents that summarize the Red List findings. Biodiversity Is In the Red
New Data Identifies 784 Species Extinct, 16,119 Highly Threatened
Jennifer Shatwell and Erika Kranz, Staff Writers

May 2, 2006: Global biodiversity loss is increasing, according to new data by the World Conservation Union (IUCN). In its 2006 Red List of Threatened Species, the IUCN declares that 784 species of flora and fauna have gone extinct since the year 1500, and a further 65 species now survive only in captivity or cultivation. One-fourth of the 40,177 species assessed in the updated resource are described as threatened with extinction. Among the most threatened in 2004 were one in eight birds and one in four mammals. To these, the updated Red List adds one in three amphibians and a quarter of the world's coniferous trees. Read more
